Special Collections & Events

Melrose provides various opportunities to safely and correctly dispose of certain items that cannot be disposed of in regular trash and recycling curbside collection. See the Schedule of Fees for pricing and below for detailed information.

Metal Items

Metal items can be picked up curbside by buying a sticker ($25 – checks only) and scheduling pickup at the Public Works Operations Facility (Office hours Mon - Fri 8:00 am - 3:30 pm). The pickups are done every Tuesday. Metal items include: washers, dryers, refrigerators, exercise equipment, air conditioners, grills, snow blowers, hot water heaters, microwaves as well as sectionals, sleeper sofas, recliners or other furniture that has a metal base. Metal items can also be dropped off at Saturday Recycling Events for $25, except for the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day.

All doors must be removed from refrigerators, freezers and other major appliances before these items are placed at curbside for collection. The City of Melrose will not pick up items with doors still attached. All glass must be removed from storm doors or other metal frames before the frames are set out for collection.

Empty propane tanks may be brought to the Recycling Center for recycling Monday, Tuesday or Thursday (8:00 am - 2:45 pm), see pricing on the Schedule of Fees, and make payment in the Office.

Saturday Recycling Events

DPW holds Saturday Recycling Events to provide opportunities to recycle various items. These events include Styrofoam recycling, rigid plastics recycling, paper shredding, mattress recycling, and pumpkin. composting. A printable calendar can be found on the Calendars & Schedules page.

Household Hazardous Waste

Melrose residents have access to household hazardous waste disposal events in and around Melrose throughout the spring, summer and fall months. Dates, locations and detailed information can be found on the Household Hazardous Waste page.

Compost Bins & Rain Barrels

The city hosts an annual spring compost bin and rain barrel sale. If you are interested in obtaining a rain barrel or compost bin, or to get on the waitlist for next year, visit the Compost Bin & Rain Barrel Sale page. Information on seasonal composting workshops can be found on DPW's Melrose Recycles blog. The City of Melrose's Roosevelt Elementary School also hosts an active composting demonstration site that is home to several styles of composting bins (including the kind sold by the city). These composters turn material from the school garden, as well as fruit and vegetable scraps from school lunch, into compost that is used on the school garden.
