Starting September 1: Rest Easy, Mattresses Now Get Recycled!

How do I recycle my mattress and/or box spring?

First, make payment by visiting the Resident Services Office at the City Yard (72 Tremont Street) or the Engineering Division in City Hall, Monday through Friday. Note: Preferred payment is by check to "City of Melrose." If you prefer to pay in cash, it is only accepted at the office at the City Yard (72 Tremont Street), not the Engineering Division in City Hall.

Options for mattress recycling:

1) Saturday Drop off at the City Yard: WEEKDAY PRE-PAYMENT REQUIRED With a pre-paid work order, mattresses will be accepted for drop-off at the City Yard on Saturdays, 8:00 am – 2:45 pm.

2) Schedule Curbside Pickup for $25 per unit (advance payment required*). Current available dates for 2022:

  • Wednesday, May 4
  • Wednesday, May 25
  • Wednesday, June 15
  • Wednesday, June 29
  • Wednesday, July 13
  • Wednesday, July 27
  • Wednesday, August 10
  • Wednesday, August 17 (Tentative, will be reviewed in June)
  • Wednesday, August 31
  • Wednesday, September 21
  • Wednesday, October 5
  • Wednesday, October 26

NOTE: If you are scheduled for curbside pickup, please have your mattresses/box springs placed curbside by 7:00 am the morning of your pick-up date. 

Green Mattress Recycling LLC will conduct curbside pickup of mattresses, as scheduled by the City of Melrose DPW. More dates for curbside collection will be added, as the program develops.

What is accepted as part of the Mattress Recycling Program?

All size mattresses, including crib and foam.All size box springs.Each piece is considered a unit.

What is NOT included in the recycling program?

Futon mattresses, air or water beds, mattress pads and toppers, pet beds

What if I am not able to get to the City Yard or City Hall during the week to make advanced payment? 

Payment may be made at the City Yard during one of the following Special Saturday Events: 9/18 (Motor Oil/Antifreeze/Gas), 10/16 (Rigid Plastics and Styrofoam), or 11/6 (Pumpkin Composting). Mattresses and other City Yard recycling items will NOT be accepted on Saturday, 10/23 (Household Hazardous Waste Day) because only Household Hazardous Waste is accepted that day.
