COMPLETE STREETS
Lower Main Street:
Hoover School Sidewalks:
Sidewalks and safety improvements are being added in the Hoover School area through funding from a State Complete Streets grant. New sidewalks were installed on Whitman Ave. and Park St. Additionally, the intersections at Echo St./Whitman Ave. and Glendower Ave./Whitman Ave. were improved by moving the curb line to create shorter crossing distances. The Glendower Rd./Birch Hill Ln. intersection was also narrowed by lane markings. ADA compliant curb ramps were installed at the intersections in the Hoover School neighborhood and safety improvements were made to pavement markings at the entrance to the school.
Woodland Ave Sidewalks:
This project includes sidewalk improvements along Woodland Ave. Existing sidewalks in poor condition will be replaced and new sidewalks will be installed to connect the existing sidewalks on Clifton Park to the existing sidewalks on Botolph St. and Franklin St. In addition, berm will be added in some locations to improve drainage patterns and some existing granite curbing will be reset.
Lebanon Street Transportation Improvement Project (TIP):
This project is the pre-design phase of a state funded TIP project to improve bicycle and pedestrian access on Lebanon St. from Sylvan St. to the Malden town line. The work includes:
- Prepare a Project Scope and Project Initiation form for the TIP program application
- Prepare a 25% design to include:
- Typical cross sections
- Cost estimates
- Identify utility poles to be relocated
- Conduct vehicle crash analysis at four intersections
- Conduct vehicle and turning movement counts
- Present the project at a public meeting
Ramp Improvements
Improvement to ramps to meet ADA compliance and the addition of crosswalks at:
- Shadow Rd./Washington St.
- Converse Ln./ Pleasant St.
- Everett St./Pleasant St.
- Dell Ave./Grove St.
- Linwood Ave./Grove St.
- Ryder Ave./Sylvan St.
- Franklin St./Warren St.
PAVING PROJECTS
- The City of Melrose conducted a Roadway Condition Assessment to assist in prioritization of paving projects. Most paving projects are funded through Chapter 90 (State funding) with some local funds. The availability of funds each year is limited and the DPW tries to be as efficient as possible when planning projects – i.e., coordinating with water, sewer, or other utility projects. Streets to be repaved in 2021 include:
- Echo St.
- Brown St., Wyoming Hts., part of Mt. Vernon St.
- First St.
- Boltoph St.
- Damon Ave. and Glendale Ave.
- Improvements at the Roosevelt School play yard
This work will include drainage improvements to the upper play yard, slope stabilization, and installation of a fence around the playground.
