What is the procedure for requesting a final meter reading on a property?

  • The current owner/real estate agent/closing attorney should contact the Melrose Water Department by email waterbills@cityofmelrose.org or call the office directly at 781-979-4175. 
  • Please schedule at least 5-7 days prior to closing.  Appointments are made at an exact time during normal business hours.
  • Someone will have to be at the property to allow our meter technician to enter the house to read/inspect or change the meter if necessary.  It must be someone over the age of 18. 
  • We require the new owner’s name(s)  be available.  As part of our process we automatically set up the new water account for the buyer.
  • The final bill is promised the next business day by noon following the scheduled read date.
  • We do not mail final bills. They can be emailed or picked up in the office once complete.
  • There is a $25 fee for final meter reads/inspections added directly to the water bill.
