Water, Sewer & Trash Discount Abatement Forms

LOW INCOME TRASH DISCOUNT APPLICATION (100%)

  • Must occupy property as principle place of residence
  • Gross income (not total taxable) of $35,000 or less if single, and $40,000 or less if married for 100% discount (or $50 per quarter)
  • Must supply proof of ownership, proof of residency, and copy of 2022 tax return reflecting all sources of income
  • Applications are taken from May 1 to October 15, and 100% discount will be applied once approved and remain in effect until December 2024.

SENIOR CITIZEN TRASH DISCOUNT APPLICATION (50% AND 100%)

  • Must be 65 years of age and occupy property as principal place of residence
  • Gross income (not total taxable) of $35,000 or less if single, and $40,000 or less if married for 100% discount (or $50 per quarter)
  • Gross income (not total taxable) of $65,870 or less if single, and $75,280 or less if married for 50% discount (or $25 per quarter)
  • Must supply proof of age, ownership, proof of residency, and copy of 2022 tax return reflecting all sources of income. If resident qualifies for 41c Senior Exemption for real estate tax relief no income verification is required.
  • Applications are taken from May 1 to October 15, and discount will be applied once approved and remain in effect until December 2024

SENIOR CITIZEN WATER AND SEWER DISCOUNT APPLICATION (20%)

  • Must be 65 years of age, occupy property as principal place of residence, and use 6250 cubic feet of water or less annually.
  • Must supply proof of age, ownership, and residency.
  • Applications are taken any time during the year as long as the resident has lived in the property for one full year. Once approved the 20% discount is applied to the next quarter water bill and will continue as long as all requirements are met. No re-applying is necessary, however annual audits will be performed each fall and if found not meeting requirements, discounts will be removed without notification.

SENIOR CITIZEN CONDO OWNER WATER / SEWER CREDIT

The City of Melrose Revised Ordinances (May 2016 Chapter 228-20) provides for an annual credit towards your Real Estate tax bill in the amount of $146 to senior citizens living in a condo where their water usage is paid for by their condo association.

  • Must be 65 years of age or older, occupy the property as your principal place of residence for at least one full year.
  • Annual water consumption by applicant must not exceed 6,250 cubic feet. Consumption will be based on the condo’s annual consumption divided by the number of units.
  • The Condo Association must not have any water/sewer bills in arrears over 90 days.
