2023: Winning Proposal

Three different groups made up of Melrose High School students put together proposals for the Mayor's 5kOURway (Participatory Budgeting) Competition, but there could only be one winner. The student body voted, and while it was a tight race, Team Period Products earned the most votes and was named the winner of the competition.

About the 2023 Participatory Budget Finalists

1st Place: Team Period Products

At Melrose High School, free period product dispensers were recently added to two of the girl's bathrooms (1st and 2nd floor) and the two LC bathrooms. However, while this was a nice gesture they are rarely full and there is one missing in the third-floor girl's bathroom. Team Period Products proposes using the $5,000 to ensure these dispensers are constantly filled to help out students who menstruate and prevent them from missing out on class time to go and find a product to use.

2nd Place: Team TLC for the LC Book Selections

The LC is a favorite place among the student body, but the books leave some more to be desired. Team LC for the LC proposed that we add comic book volumes to bookshelves. Specifically DC, Marvel, and Japanese Graphic novels, because those comics are harder to find, so it might incentivize students to read more. This would be useful to the school, and any teachers who want books that will entertain the students.

3rd Place: Team Outdoor Water Fountain

Team Outdoor Water Fountain proposed the Installation of a water fountain by the Morelli Baseball Field. They cited the following benefits: Students 1. Students will not need to buy water; 2. The fountain would encourage hydration; 3. It will help people at sporting events and other occurrences at the Fred Green Field; 4. It would help reduce plastic waste from plastic bottles, reducing our school's carbon footprint; 5. They are sanitary/contactless;  5. No charge to the user, so the public has access to free healthy water; and 6. It may stop the spread of diseases because people don’t have to share water bottles during games/practices.
