Important Information About Property Taxes and Senior Discounts

In recent weeks, we have heard from residents who are feeling conflicted about the upcoming tax override vote. On one hand, they are supportive of the city’s programs and services and understand that many of the programs they value are at risk without new revenue. On the other hand, they are concerned about what it will mean to their own personal finances, which is completely understandable. This is especially true for older residents who are on fixed incomes. I want to make sure that all residents explore two important resources: Our tax impact calculator and our tax relief programs.

The best way to clarify exactly how much the override will impact your property tax bill is by using our tax impact calculator. By entering your street address into the tax impact calculator, you will see the effect on your personal property for your annual tax bill. You can also call our Assessor’s office at 781-979-4104, and they can go over your information on the phone or in person at City Hall.

After getting clarification on how your bill will be affected, please also explore the city’s tax relief options to see if you are eligible for any relief. There are programs that help low-income residents, Veterans, and senior citizens. Residents of any income level who are over 65 can participate in our work-off program to receive $1,000 off their annual tax bill, and we also have a tax deferral program that allows residents to defer their taxes until the sale of their home. The deadline for applying for these programs is April 1, 2019.
