Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Weekend Events

Melrose will celebrate the memory and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in a variety of ways this weekend.

Temple Beth Shalom invites all to an MLK Day Shabbat on Friday, January 17, at 7:30 p.m. This will be a special celebration of Social Justice, inspired by the life and teachings of Martin Luther King Jr., with special guests Mayor Paul Brodeur and Dr. Laurence Lowenthal.

On Monday, January 20, the Melrose Human Rights Commission and Gabriella's Pizza will sponsor the MLK Day of Service, followed in the evening by a potluck dinner and a program featuring Suffolk County DA Rachael Rollins.

Registration for the Day of Service will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Melrose Unitarian Universalist Church, 

As part of the Day of Service, Temple Beth Shalom will sponsor Mitzvah Day at the Temple. There will be 2 activities: Making cards for Melrose-Wakefield Hospital patients or 1 hour of ESL Training to teach local refugees. Registration located at Melrose Uniarian Universalist Christ, 70 W. Emerson St.

They are are also accepting donations:

  • Clothes for kids ages 4 to 18
  • Collars, leashes, cat toys, and cat food (canned & dry)
  • Paperback books for prisoners
  • Magazines for hospital patients

The First United Methodist Church of Melrose, 645 Main St., is hosting a Crayon Creations service project on Monday, January 20, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., as part of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.
