This is Mayor Paul Brodeur

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has released its weekly city and town confirmed COVID-19 case total. Melrose has had 206 cases since the onset of the pandemic. The statistics are headed in the right direction, but we need to keep up important prevention measures to continue that progress. So please use those masks you received, maintain physical distancing of 6 feet or more, avoid unnecessary trips, wash your hands and use sanitizer, and if you feel sick, please stay home!

I know many of you were looking forward to the annual Healthy Melrose Fair. Due to the pandemic, we were not able to host our traditional event. However, the Healthy Melrose Committee has put together a great program called Healthy Melrose at Home. Until the end of May, they will be providing web content including health tips, sustainability ideas, vendor profiles and more. To join in, please visit their website healthymelrose.com and be sure to follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

May is Mental Health Month, and now more than ever we should be mindful of the need to take care of our minds and bodies. The Massachusetts Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness has an incredible compilation of resources for those dealing with mental illness and for their friends and loved ones. This includes peer supports, family support groups, emergency assistance, and navigating a mental health crisis. NAMI also does important public policy work to address mental health issues and end the stigma associated with mental illness. You can find all this and more at their website: namimass.org/.

For mental health referrals and other information, you can also use the Interface service of William James College. The City funds this referral service which is available to every resident of Melrose. For more information, please go to interface.williamjames.edu/ .

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you or a loved one are struggling and don’t know where to turn. There is no judgment or stigma, only the opportunity to get help.

As always, thank you all for your efforts to keep our community safe and healthy. Remember that together we will get through this.
