This is Mayor Paul Brodeur

I have some new statistics from the Department of Public Health that give a better picture of the status of the pandemic here in Melrose. Since DPH began tracking COVID-19 confirmed positive cases, Melrose has had 251 total positive cases with 27 deaths. We currently have six active cases in Melrose. The positive trend is consistent with statewide data.

This is great news but stands in sharp contrast to the experiences of other states that took more aggressive approaches to reopening. In fact, several states have rolled back reopening policies in response to recent large spikes in cases. To protect our progress and continue moving forward, please review Governor Baker’s phase 3 rules and remember that face coverings, social distancing, and washing your hands are simple ways to protect the public health. And as always, if you exhibit symptoms, stay home.

Massachusetts has also announced a Stop the Spread campaign, with free testing in eight communities including nearby Everett. The testing is free, and you do not have to be a resident or exhibit symptoms to get a test. For more information, use the link on the screen or call the Commonwealth’s 211 information line.

In other exciting local news, Superintendent Kukenberger and her team are working hard to develop the plans for school reopening and are providing several opportunities for public questions and input. Visit MelroseSchools.com for more information and to sign up the get the superintendent’s newsletter. If you are a fan of social media, please follow her on Twitter!

Finally, a huge shout-out to the Melrose Education Foundation. Despite the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic, the Ed Foundation has awarded twelve grants in three categories to support learning at all levels in the Melrose Public Schools. The district is lucky to have the Foundation donating thousands of dollars to our schools each year to support innovations in learning.

Have a great week everyone. Remember that together, we will get through this.
