Good evening, this is your Mayor Paul Brodeur.

Today we have just one additional case of COVID-19, bringing our total to 74. That’s great news, and I hope it inspires you to redouble your efforts regarding social distancing and other precautionary measures that help protect our community. I recently read an article from the New York Times sent to me by a constituent that pointed out that during the 1918 Influenza pandemic, cities that went all in on social distancing had lower mortality rates and higher employment gains in recovery than cities that took less stringent actions. While the economy has obviously changed a lot since that time, the analysis suggests the policy we are following is a wise one.

I want to remind you about two fun events coming up. At 7:00 tonight, Melrose is participating in our second Clap Because We Care. This event takes place rain or shine, and we are hoping you can also light a candle or flick your porch lights in addition to taking some noise to support all of our frontline workers and thank them for their efforts. I will see you/hear you at 7:00. Let’s make it louder than ever.

And on Sunday, starting at 11:00 a.m. our Melrose Spring Celebration parade will be winding its way through the streets of the city. A bunny caravan will drive down your street (or one near you) until we get to as many streets as possible – complete with flashing lights and sirens. Come to your window, front lawn or doorway and give the bunny a socially-distanced wave. I want to thank Melrose Helps, Melrose DPW, Police, and Fire for helping to put this event together, and to the YMCA, Beansprout Gifts, and Music 101 for their support. Please remember this only works if you practice good social distancing!

It’s going to be a great weekend Melrose. Please stay safe and keep practicing social distancing to protect yourself, your family, your friends and neighbors and even strangers. Remember, together we will get through this.

Thank you, and good night.
