Municipal Buildings Closed: December 25 & 26

In observance of Christmas, most Melrose municipal buildings will be closed on Monday, December 25, and Tuesday, December 26. The closures include City Hall, the City Yard, Melrose Public Library, and the Milano Center. Buildings will resume regular operational hours on Wednesday, December 27. Melrose public safety buildings will remain open through the holiday.


Curbside Trash & Recycling Christmas Week: One-Day Delay

Curbside trash and recycling collection will be delayed by one day the week of Monday, December 25, 2023 (Monday’s route will be picked up on Tuesday; Tuesday’s route will be picked up on Wednesday; and so forth). The metal goods collection that typically occurs on Tuesdays will be postponed until Wednesday, December 27.


City Yard Hours Christmas Week: Post-Holiday Recycling, Yard Waste, and Composting

The City Yard will be open for drop-offs of recycling, yard waste, and compost from 7:30 AM to 2:45 PM on Wednesday, December 27, Thursday, December 28, and Friday, December 29, to provide additional opportunities for residents to bring post-holiday recycling (cardboard, etc.) and late-season yard waste for composting.

Please note that the following holiday items should not be recycled: Wrapping paper (of any kind, except for Kraft material); tissue paper (can be composted); bows and ribbons; string/fairy lights; plastic garlands and wreaths; Gift bags; confetti, shredded paper; and Styrofoam of any kind.

In observance of New Year’s Day, most Melrose municipal buildings will be closed on Monday, January 1. The closures include City Hall, the City Yard, Melrose Public Library, and the Milano Center, whereas Melrose Public Safety Buildings will remain open.  Buildings will resume regular operational hours on Tuesday, January 2.


Curbside Trash & Recycling Collection New Year's Week: One-Day Delay

Curbside trash and recycling collection will be delayed by one day the week of Monday, January 1, 2024 (Monday’s route will be picked up on Tuesday; Tuesday’s route will be picked up on Wednesday; and so forth).


2024 Trash and Recycling Calendars: Arriving in Your Mail Boxes Soon

All Melrose residences will receive a 2024 Trash and Recycling Calendar in the form of a postcard from the Department of Public Works in the mail by the end of 2023.

If you do not receive a calendar by the end of 2023, contact the Department of Public Works, and in the meantime, to view the calendar, visit www.cityofmelrose.org/solid-waste-recycling/pages/calendars-schedules. The 2024 Trash and Recycling Calendars can also be picked up at the Mayor’s Office and City Yard.


Curbside Christmas Tree Collection: Bare is Best

Curbside Christmas tree collection will take place between January 2, 2024, and January 12, 2024. Trees in plastic bags and with decorations or lights, will not be collected; please leave out a bare tree. Tree stands will also not be collected.


Post-Holiday and Styrofoam Recycling Event: More Information Coming Soon

The Department of Public Works is hosting a Post-Holiday and Styrofoam Recycling event on Saturday, January 6, from 8 AM until 12 PM More information will be available soon.
