Today is the Deadline to Apply to Superintendent Screening Committee

Superintendent Search Committee

The deadline to apply to join the Superintendent Screening Committee is today, Thursday, January 26, at 4 p.m.

Melrose School Committee (SC) is seeking community volunteers to serve on the preliminary Superintendent Screening Committee that will be charged with selecting candidates (finalists) to be interviewed by the full School Committee as part of the search for the next Superintendent of Melrose Public Schools. From these finalists, the SC will interview and appoint the next Superintendent of Melrose Public Schools.

All Community Members are Encouraged to Apply:

The SC is committed to having a diverse and inclusive Screening Committee that will include representatives from the School Committee, staff, community, parents, and an expert in the field of education.

The SC is Seeking the Following Roles to Join the Screening Committee:

  • 3 Parents (one from each level: Pre-K/Elementary, Middle School; High School)
  • 2 Community Representatives
  • 1 Expert in the Field of Education
  • 2 School Committee members (in addition to Screening Committee Chair Ed O’Connell)
  • 1 District Administrator
  • 3 District Teachers (one from each level: Pre-K/Elementary, Middle School, High School)
  • 1 District Principal
  • 1 Staff Member (from a bargaining group/unit/category other than those identified above)

Applicants Must be Available* for the Following Meetings:

February 16, 6 p.m. – Orientation Meeting: At this meeting, the MASC consultant will review confidentiality expectations and the Screening Committee will identify interview times for the period of March 6—13.

March 2, 6 p.m. – Candidate Selection: The Screening Committee will identify candidates to be invited for interviews during the period of March 6-13.

Period of March 6-13, 5-9 p.m. – Candidate Interviews: Interviews will take place in the late afternoon and early evening.

March 14 (optional attendance):  Screening Committee presents a list of finalists to the School Committee.

*It is critical that all members of the Screening Committee be present for all candidate interviews to enable participation in voting for finalists. Setting meeting dates for the Screening Committee before recruiting is critical to keeping the search on track by ensuring that interested volunteers can make the scheduled meetings.

How to Apply:

To apply, those interested in a volunteer position must email or mail the following information to School Committee Chair Margaret Driscoll no later than TODAY at 4 p.m.:

  1. A confirmation that they are available on the dates/times identified above.
  2. A brief introduction and explanation about why they would like to be a member of the Screening Committee.
  3. The role(s) (e.g., parent, community member, etc.) with which they’d like to be associated.

SC Chair Margaret Driscoll can be reached at mpssupersearch@melroseschools.com or 49 Boston Rock Road, Melrose, MA 02176.

Please note: the SC will likely receive more interest in serving than their process allows. The difficult selection decision will be based on their effort to have a Screening Committee that is broadly representative of the Melrose community. A Screening Committee Selection Committee will make selections in late January.

The Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) is assisting the SC in this recruitment and selection process and their search consultants will facilitate the Screening Committee process, which is a confidential candidate screening process that will meet in Executive Session.
