Tips for Coping with the Heat Wave

Weather Map for July 3, 2018, showing extreme high temperatures throughout Massachusetts

The hot temperatures of June are giving way to the even hotter temperatures of July, as you can see from the forecast for tomorrow. The high temperatures and humidity are expected to continue for the rest of the week, so remember to keep cool! Some tips that bear repeating:

  • Never leave children or pets in your car. Even with the windows cracked open, the temperature inside can go up almost 20 degrees in just 10 minutes.
  • Slow down and avoid strenuous activity.
  • Wear lightweight,loose-fitting clothing. Light colors reflect sunlight and may keep you cooler.
  • Drink plenty of water—even if you are not thirsty. Avoid drinks with alcohol, caffeine, or lots of sugar. If you must limit the amount you drink for medical reasons check with your doctor.
  • Stay out of the sun as much as possible, and do not leave pets outside for long periods of time.
  • If you don’t have air conditioning in your house, stay on a low floor and out of the sun. Close the blinds on windows that get strong sunlight, and use fans to stay cool.
