Spring Swap Day Cancelled

Zero Waste Melrose (ZWM) regrets to announce that the Swap Day event scheduled for this spring has been cancelled in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The event would have taken place on May 30, 2020, in the parking lot behind Memorial Hall on Main Street.

“Our Swap Day events have become increasingly popular, offering opportunities for Melrose residents to find new life for items that they no longer find useful in their own homes, rather than put them in the trash,” said ZWM Co-chair George Stubbs in announcing the event cancellation. “Unfortunately, the dynamics of the Swap Day event—lots of materials changing hands, dozens of people in close quarters—do not lend themselves to the kinds of distancing and safety regulations and guidelines that are in place today and likely to remain in place for the foreseeable future,” he added.

The Fall Swap Day is scheduled for September 26, 2020. ZWM will work with city officials to determine whether this event can be conducted in a safe manner, in light of whatever guidelines and regulations are in place at that time. “We will obviously consult with the Mayor’s Office, the Melrose Department of Public Works, and city health officials before we consider holding an event of this nature,” Stubbs noted.

In the meantime, ZWM advises people who have been storing items for Swap Day to consider the following organizations and options as avenues for finding new homes for these items. PLEASE: contact the pick-up and drop-off organizations in advance to find out how, or even whether, they are conducting their operations during the pandemic.
