Remembering Beth Lucien

Photo of Beth LucienLast week we lost a very special member of the City of Melrose family. Beth Lucien came to work for the city in 2002, as Mayor Dolan’s assistant, and she continued to work here until she moved to Maine in 2008. When her family moved back here, a few years later, she went to work at the SDM Foundation, helping Melrosians solve the mysteries of their computers.

Beth came to the City of Melrose at a time of transition and set up the organizational systems we still use today, making sure that appointments were kept, calls were returned, and paperwork was dealt with. She supervised the first groups of summer interns, setting up one of our office’s most popular programs. She administered the Emergency Fund with the same kindness and attentiveness that she brought to every aspect of her life. While the office was always busy, Beth was an island of calm, quiet but always quick to laugh.

There are very few people of whom almost everyone can say “It was a joy to know her.” Beth Lucien was one of those people. She was kind, funny, and handled every situation with quiet grace. Even when she was seriously ill, she didn’t want us to be sad. She wanted us to blow bubbles.

Beth, it was a joy to know you. And when the sun comes out again, we will blow bubbles in your memory.
