Outdoor Dining & Seating Returns to the Melrose Restaurant Scene

People Dining in Melrose

Mayor Broder’s Office is pleased to announce outdoor dining is returning to Melrose as the City is once again supporting what has become a popular practice adopted by many food-service businesses during the pandemic.

First authorized in Massachusetts in 2021, expanded outdoor dining is still a relatively new initiative made possible by an executive order issued by Governor Baker in 2020, and renewed in 2021. The order has permitted municipalities to use an expedited process to approve temporary permits for new or expanded outdoor dining and alcohol service. The rules have since been extended through April 1, 2023, by way of a state $1.6 billion fiscal 2022 supplemental budget Baker signed. The bill also extends, through April 1, 2023, an emergency provision allowing restaurants to sell beer, wine, and cocktails to go.

“This is great news for our local restaurants and our community,” said Mayor Brodeur. “Many of our food businesses found their customers have embraced outdoor dining, and our expanded use of public spaces has deepened our sense of community here in Melrose.

Residents will have the opportunity to experience outdoor dining at the City’s upcoming Block Party taking place in Downtown Melrose on Friday, June 17, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

The following full-service restaurants are offering outdoor dining this season:

In addition to the restaurants listed above, many additional food establishments in Melrose have outdoor seating available for customers to enjoy their favorite items. The City’s parklets are also a great amenity for eating outside, and you can always enjoy takeout at home.

“Although it may feel as though foot traffic and general economic activity around Melrose has returned to pre-pandemic levels, local businesses still need our support,” says Lauren Grymek, the City’s Director of Economic Recovery and Business Development. “Patronize Melrose restaurants whenever you can and encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same. Try at least one new food establishment in Melrose this summer, purchase a gift card and give it to someone for a special occasion or just because. Every bit of support helps.”

Additional Melrose restaurants to support include:
