The Melrose Education Foundation is excited to bring Melrose native and New York Times best-selling author Brendan Kiely to Melrose High School for a day of engagement in our schools and community on Monday, February 8 as part of its Parent University Series: Conversations with Brendan Kiely.

In addition to guiding teachers and students through workshops during the day, Brendan will lead an evening conversation and book talk with community members, parents, caregivers, and students (recommended for middle-school-aged children and older) on February 8 at 7 p.m. All are welcome to attend this free public event taking place in the MHS Driscoll Learning Commons. Community members can RSVP by visiting MelroseEducationFoundation.org.

Known for his activism around racial justice, feminism, and intersectionality, Kiely, a former high school teacher, is the kind of young adult (YA) writer who meets young people where they live and engages them in the most compelling social issues of our time.

Parent U: Conversations with Brendan Kiely will focus on two of his books:

  • The Other Talk: Reckoning with our White Privilege: The Other Talk begins a much-needed conversation for white kids. In an instantly relatable and deeply honest account of his own life, Brendan Kiely offers young readers a way to understand one’s own white privilege and why allyship is so vital so that we can all start doing our part—today.
  • All American Boys with Jason Reynolds: In this Coretta Scott King Honor Award–winning novel, two teens—one black, one white—grapple with the repercussions of a single violent act that leaves their school, their community, and, ultimately, the country bitterly divided by racial tension.
