National Grid Investigating Cause of Essex Street Explosion

An explosion on Essex Street last night blew off two manhole covers and shattered windows, but National Grid does not believe gas was the cause. There were no injuries or power outages, according to Police Chief Mike Lyle.

“We are currently investigating the cause, but have no indication this is gas related,” National Grid said in a statement to Channel 5. “Neither gas nor electric service has been impacted to our customers in the area.”

The explosion occurred near the Cedar Park station, on Essex between Vine and West Emerson streets around 8 p.m.

National Grid responded to the scene, along with police and fire, last night and Chief Lyle expects them to be back this morning to continue the investigation. We will update you when we have more information.
