Message from Superintendent Taymore: Melrose Public Schools to Close

Dear Melrose Public School Community:

The Melrose Public Schools will close for two weeks beginning March 16 through March 27. We do not do this lightly, as we know it presents difficulties for many families. We are doing as much as possible to reduce that burden, but the most important step we can take at this moment is to slow the spread of the virus. Our decision has been informed by the advice of our Health Director, Ruth Clay, and other public health experts.  We believe we can have a greater and more positive impact on public health and safety by joining with other districts in making these difficult decisions together.

Please be aware that this school closure period may be extended.

We are taking this step as a public health measure and out of sensitivity to families and staff who have underlying conditions that may make them more vulnerable to complications should they become infected. In making this decision, we considered the hardships it will impose on many of our families, including childcare, as well as challenges for our students who depend on us for lunch, special education services, English language instruction, and daily support for their social emotional well-being. We also want to provide students with opportunities for learning so they can continue to make academic and personal progress. By early next week we will share additional details about what those services and supports will look like while the schools are closed.

As more details are available, the building principals and I will keep you closely informed. Please continue to take all precautions, including hand-washing and social distancing, and follow all guidance from City and State officials. Thank you for your understanding during this challenging time.
