In a final act of generosity before disbanding, the Melrose Veterans Club donated its remaining operating budget of nearly $400 to the City of Melrose’s Veterans’ Donation Fund.

“We would like to thank the members of the Melrose Veterans Club for generously donating their remaining operating funds to the Veterans’ Donation Fund,” said Mayor Paul Brodeur. “The club’s donation supports our goal of bridging the gap for our veterans who need help but do not have other means to obtain it. We are also grateful for the great value the club has added to our community for the past several decades.”

The Melrose Veterans Club was founded shortly after WWII and for decades held many events for veterans and their families. In recent years, the club had trouble recruiting younger veterans and with COVID and its aftermath, there were few members left.

Club President Helen Giorgio and Club Treasurer Anne Nocito, along with the club’s remaining members, decided that their final contribution to the veterans of Melrose would be to donate the club’s remaining operating funds to the Veterans’ Donation Fund. The donation was presented to the Veterans’ Services Office staff by Vietnam Veteran Michael Nocito and his wife, Anne Nocito, on January 25, 2023.

The Veterans’ Donation Fund, offered through the City of Melrose’s Veterans’ Services Office, provides veterans of Melrose with one-time emergency assistance including rental assistance, help with medical and utility bills, as well as food and gas cards, as needed.
