Melrose DPW to Implement 4-Way Stop at Intersection of West Emerson/Tremont/Essex Streets Overnight on 4/19

The Melrose Department of Public Works (DPW) will work overnight on Wednesday, April 19, to install a new 4-way stop at the intersection of West Emerson, Tremont, and Essex Streets. The change to the intersection, which was previously a 3-way stop, is per a Traffic Commission vote to create a 4-way stop condition at this intersection.

As part of the Traffic Commission’s vetting process, the commission worked with an outside consultant and utilized data from traffic volumes, crash histories, and the intersection’s proximity to the railroad tracks to determine the recommended configuration of the 4-way stop.

To ensure drivers, pedestrians, and all other commuters are aware of the change, the DPW has installed a temporary flashing sign board on West Emerson St. and will place a “stop ahead” sandwich board on the approach to the new stop sign. In addition, all four stop signs at the 4-way stop will have “All Way” signs beneath them, and, at the train tracks, DPW will install new LED signage reminding drivers not to stop on the tracks, along with new line painting (large Xs) to also signify no stopping in that location. The DPW has also notified all residents living in the general vicinity of the intersection via the City's Everbridge Notification and Alerts System.

In the coming weeks, the DPW urges residents to please proceed with caution as the new traffic configuration will be an adjustment for drivers, pedestrians, and all other commuters, and obey all posted signs.

Thank you for your help in improving traffic safety in this neighborhood.
