Melrose Council on Aging Brings Power Over Parkinson’s Classes to the Milano Center

People exercising in a community center.

The Melrose Council on Aging, in collaboration with Healthy Aging Physical Therapy, is hosting biweekly fitness classes to benefit members of the community with Parkinson’s. The classes, titled Power Over Parkinson’s, will be held the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month at the Milano Center, 201 West Foster Street, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. beginning June 12, 2023.

Power Over Parkinson's is a fitness class designed to promote improved mobility, strength, and balance for people living with Parkinson's Disease and other movement disorders. According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, 10 million people worldwide are affected by Parkinson’s Disease.  Regular exercise for those with Parkinson’s has proven to slow progression and increase quality of life.

Melrose residents 60 and over are welcome to join at $5 per class, no registration required.

The classes are led by Dr. Allison Leonard PT, DPT, who has 20 years of experience as a Physical Therapist. Throughout the class, Dr. Leonard will utilize her certification in PWR! Moves, a program specifically targeted towards mobility for people with Parkinson’s. The varying levels of PWR! Move exercises allow participants to safely perform each movement, but still provide a challenging movement-based class.
