Melrose Community Reading Event: Open Books, Open Minds

Melrose Organizes For Real Equality, in partnership with the Melrose Public Library, invites the community to join us as we read two books about race relations in America from the perspective of two men, one black, one white, and then meet to talk about what we have read in a guided discussion.

Between The World and Me, by Ta-Nehesi-Coates is written in a series of essays as a letter to his son in which Coates examines the notion of race in America and how it has shaped American history, many times at the cost of black bodies and lives.

White Like Me by Tim Wise is a memoir in which the author explores the ways that racial privilege shapes the lives of many white people, whether they realize it or not.

Several copies of both books are currently available at the Library; please look for the display.

The discussion will be held on Monday, November 20, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. in the meeting room on the lower level of the Melrose Public Library. You must sign up in order to attend, in two ways:

Please sign up online to reserve a seat or call the Library and speak with a library staff member, 781-665-2313.
