Melrose residents are invited to participate in “Make Melrose Clean Again!” on Saturday & Sunday April 28 & 29. The citywide community cleanup is sponsored by Cummings Home Improvement LLC, Tiger Dumpsters and Alderman-at-Large Monica Medeiros.

The event is the brainchild of Ted Cummings of Howard Street, owner of Melrose-based Cummings Home Improvement LLC, who said he reached his boiling point while walking his dog and seeing all the trash in his neighborhood. Rather than watch people in the Melrose Facebook groups argue over who is at fault, Cummings decided to take action.

“It’s time to stop trashing each other and start trashing the trash,” Cummings said.

Tiger Dumpsters of Myrtle Street has donated a 20-yard dumpster which will be placed in front of the Tremont Street DPW Operations Center to collect trash throughout the two-day event.

Cummings Home Improvements LLC of Howard Street in Melrose will provide trash bags, gloves and will pay for the proper disposal of the trash collected.

“I am so grateful we have these local businesses stepping up to help our community,” said Alderman Monica Medeiros who is helping coordinate the event. “Our goal is to have one community working together with the common goal of making our city a cleaner, prettier, greener place to live,” Medeiros said.

Cummings said he was grateful to have the support of the city officials, and stressed how accommodating Mayor Infurna and the DPW were allowing the dumpster to be placed on city property for the event.

Captains are being sought to gather volunteers, pick up and distribute the provided supplies, and organize a canvas of their neighborhoods, as they choose.

Residents are asked to give a little of their time to pick up trash that has built up on our streets and sidewalks. Volunteers may work with a team or simply collect trash on their own and place it in the Tiger Dumpster near DPW headquarters anytime from 9 am – 6 pm on Saturday or Sunday.
