Mayor Brodeur Seeks Volunteers to Serve on Historic District Commission

Mayor Paul Brodeur is currently seeking Melrose residents to serve on the Melrose Historic District Commission (HDC). An ideal candidate will have a passion for contributing to the City, attention to reviewing and discussing architectural details, an ability to think critically and voice opinions during a public meeting, and the time to commit to attending monthly night meetings.

Responsibilities of the HDC include but are not limited to:

The Melrose HDC reviews all proposed architectural changes in the Downtown Historic District to preserve and protect the distinctive and significant characteristics of buildings and places; to maintain and improve the settings of those buildings and places; and to encourage new designs compatible with existing buildings in the district. Commissioners review proposed changes to buildings, as well as signs, fences, walls, light fixtures, or similar exterior changes that are visible from a public way. Building projects that must be reviewed include construction, reconstruction, demolition, and removal of architectural features.

The Commission consists of seven members including experts in the fields of architecture, law, real estate, and history, residents of the Melrose Historic District, and other residents who are generally interested in the built environment of the downtown district.

The HDC is supported by the City of Melrose Office of Planning and Community Development. Meetings typically take place in person at City Hall on the second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. as needed. To learn more about the Historic District Commission, visit the Melrose City Charter.
