Last Day to Register to Vote Approaches Ahead of Upcoming Northeast Metropolitan School District-Wide Election

Melrose residents can register to vote by visiting the Clerk’s Office at City Hall via the Essex Street entrance or online by visiting cityofmelrose.org/elections/pages/register-vote.
Register to Vote by January 5 -- ahead of special election

The last day residents can vote approaches ahead of the upcoming special election that would authorize the funding of a new $317 million Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational High School (Northeast Metro Tech) building. The special election will take place on Tuesday, January 25 from 11a.m. to 6p.m. in the gym complex of the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School located at 90 Melrose Street. The last day residents can vote is January 5, up until 8p.m.

All of the 12 municipalities that Northeast Metro Tech serves - Chelsea, Malden, Melrose, North Reading, Reading, Revere, Saugus, Stoneham, Wakefield, Winchester, Winthrop, and Woburn - will be voting in the special election. Residents will vote on whether to authorize North East Metro Tech to borrow the funds to proceed with the project. If the borrowing of funds is approved in the election, the 12 communities will be responsible for paying off the resulting debt. Each community’s debt obligation will be based on that community’s student enrollment.

If the funding is authorized, the City of Melrose would acquire an escalating debt service cost beginning at $63,963 in Fiscal Year 2023 to an average of $351,000 per year until Fiscal Year 2056.

The new building will increase student capacity for the school. Additional information on the project can be viewed at northeastbuildingproject.com. Any questions or comments related to the renovation project can be sent to NortheastMetro@PMAConsultants.com.
