Howard Street Sewer and Road Work to Resume on July 8

Map of Howard Street detours

In an effort to minimize construction in the Howard Street neighborhood, beginning on July 8, 2019, the City of Melrose’s Public Works Department will be resuming both our sewer and roadway projects. Sewer work will be performed by Unified Contracting and their subcontractor, D’Allessandro Corp., and roadway work will be performed by D&R Paving upon completion of utility pole removal by Verizon.

The sewer work will entail a sewer repair on the stretch of Howard Street between Hesseltine Avenue and Nelson Road/Ruggles Street. The sewer work is anticipated to be completed within 10 working days and all excavations will be covered each night.

The roadway work is a continuation of the reconfiguration of the intersection at Howard and Green Streets into a mini‐roundabout for vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle safety. The remaining work in the roundabout is anticipated to take a total of approximately four to five weeks.

Daytime road closures are anticipated to occur during the first two weeks of construction. There may also be one or two nighttime road closures to complete the final line painting of the intersection and associated crosswalks toward the end of the roundabout project. Trucks will be directed away from neighborhood detour routes. Emergency vehicles will have access to all roads for the duration of the work. In addition, the residential areas around the work area will be open to abutters only while the work is being performed. The map above shows the detour route. Expect traffic on this detour route to be heavy during peak commuter hours and please allow extra travel time.

We will work directly with residents in the immediate work area to ensure they can access their driveways throughout construction. If there are days when we need residents to move their cars prior to work right in front of their driveways, the contractors or City personnel will knock on doors to notify residents. We will also keep you informed if there are days during construction when residents of the immediate area may park on adjacent streets overnight. The police department has been notified of this possibility, and you should not be ticketed.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call the Engineering Division at 781‐979‐4172. For the sewer project, please ask for Scott Dixon. For the roadway project, please ask for Rick Cantone. Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation during these projects.
