Eligible Melrose Senior Taxpayers to Receive Circuit Breaker Tax Exemption

Seniors who receive Circuit Breaker Tax Credit on State Income Tax may be eligible for real estate tax relief equal to 150% of the amount of their Massachusetts Circuit Breaker credit (up to $1,800 for the current tax year). 

To qualify for the Exemption for Fiscal Year 2024, residents must: 

  • Receive the Circuit Breaker Tax Credit on your Massachusetts Personal Income Tax Return. 
  • Be age 65 or older by December 31, 2022 as a single applicant or any co-applicant must be age 60 by December 31, 2022. 
  • Own and occupy a home in Melrose as your main dwelling for the past 10 consecutive years and have no other significant assets (such as a 2nd home). 
  • Assessed value of property (FY 2023) must be no greater than $912,000. 

Residents must apply to the Board of Assessors now through September 29, 2023 to qualify. Residents can obtain an application through the Melrose Assessor’s Office (781-979-4104), the Milano Center (781-662-6886) or on the Assessor’s web page www.cityofmelrose.org/assessor.  

Along with the application, residents must include a copy of their 2022 State Income Tax Return, indicating Circuit Breaker Amount, a copy of photo ID and a copy of trust documents, if the property is held in trust.  

Mail application or deliver in-person to the Melrose Assessor’s Office during the months of July, August and September 2023 for the Melrose Board of Assessors to determine eligibility. The deadline for the applications to reach the Assessor's Office is Friday, September 29, 2023. 

Approved exemption amounts will be applied to applicants’ fiscal year 2024 actual tax bills (due in February and May 2024). Residents may apply for and receive in addition any other Melrose property tax exemptions that they are eligible for (41C, 17D, 17S, 41A). Residents must apply annually for this and all real estate tax exemptions.
