City of Melrose Shares News that Waste Collector JRM Acquired by National Company

In an effort to keep the Melrose community informed, the Melrose Department of Public Works today shared that the City’s waste collector, JRM Hauling and Recycling Services Inc., has been acquired by Republic Services Inc., a national company that will take over the management of trash and recycling collection for Melrose residents.

In mid-April 2022, Republic Services signed an agreement to buy JRM, the Peabody-based company that had contracts with several other local municipalities such as Salem and Gloucester for residential trash and recycling collection. The deal closed last week.

“Many of JRM’s resources, including equipment and personnel, are expected to continue under Republic’s new management,” said Elena Proakis Ellis, Director of Public Works. “While we don’t expect any changes to service, our top priorities will be to proactively address any issues and continue to communicate with the community as Republic adapts to serving Melrose.”

The City’s standard weekly schedule for trash and recycling will not be affected. Community members can share questions and comments by contacting the Resident Services Office at the Department of Public Works Operations Facility at 781-665-0142.
