City of Melrose Seeks Volunteers to Join Commission on Women

The City of Melrose is currently seeking three volunteers to join the Melrose Commission on Women, which works to study, understand, educate, and promote constructive action in areas of interest and concern to women and girls in the community. As a central voice representing the interests of women and girls in the community, the Commission facilitates and promotes economic, health, safety, education, leadership, and advocacy opportunities for women, fostering the advancement of women and girls toward full equality in all areas of life, and provides the Melrose community with a needed vehicle for information, advocacy, and action on issues affecting women.

The responsibilities of the Commission on Women include:

  • Survey and engage the women of Melrose to understand issues of concern and areas of opportunity, such as family and workplace policies, pay equity, women's health, and other areas as identified; and
  • Educate leaders of business, education, health care, local government, media, and the public on issues affecting women in our community; and
  • Promote and facilitate collaboration among local boards, commissions, and organizations regarding issues affecting women in our community; and
  • Serve as an educational resource by conducting research, producing publications, and providing educational programs; and
  • Develop and implement special projects and community events focused on areas of interest and concern to women which are not currently being implemented; and
  • Recognize and promote the accomplishments of women in the community; and
  • Preserve, document, and educate the public on the important contributions of women throughout the community's history.

The Melrose Commission on Women (MCW) is a 9-member volunteer board. The members must be residents of the City of Melrose, shall be drawn from diverse racial, ethnic, religious, age, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and shall have prior experience working toward the improvement of the status of women in society. MCW is committed to diversity and seeks to improve the lives of women with diverse racial, ethnic, religious, age, sexual orientation, and socio-economic backgrounds. The Commission generally meets on the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in-person at Melrose City Hall or virtually.
