City of Melrose Employees to Participate in Inclusive Leadership Training

City of Melrose Employees to Participate in Inclusive Leadership Training

To continue to build upon the education received in their first two Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training sessions, City of Melrose employees will participate in their third DEI Training session, "Inclusive Leadership”, tomorrow, Wednesday, October 11, 2023. The training will be facilitated by the City’s DEI consultant, Racial Equity Group, which the City hired to conduct a comprehensive series of five DEI training sessions for employees.

To ensure all staff can participate in the training, many City departments will be lightly staffed, and the following City offices will be closed:

  • Melrose Public Library, from 9:15 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
  • Department of Public Work Offices at the City Yard, from 9:15 a.m. until 11:45 a.m.
  • Health and Human Services Department, from 12:45 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.
  • Information Technology Department, from 12:45 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.
  • Clerk of Committees Office, from 12:45 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.
  • Inspection Services Department, from 9:15 – 11:45 a.m.

The Inclusive Leadership training will equip City employees with the skills to identify the six core competencies of inclusive leaders; create environments of psychological safety; cultivate the ability to conduct courageous conversations for cultural tensions and conflict; and create an inclusive environment where talent and ideas flourish.

“Leadership qualities transcend titles and roles, and we believe that every City of Melrose employee has the capacity to exhibit leadership skills in their daily work,” said Human Resources Director for the City of Melrose, Polina Platta. “This training is designed to empower our employees to demonstrate these qualities and foster an environment of inclusivity, respect, and equity.”

The DEI trainings are in line with the City of Melrose's commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. The first two sessions were foundational, designed to foster a shared knowledge base, establish a common language, and enhance our collective understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The DEI training courses are the next step in implementing the recommendations outlined in the City’s 2022 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Assessment and Racial Climate Survey. Through the training series, the City seeks to empower employees to recognize, respect, and value the differences that lead to innovative approaches and diverse thought and to develop skills to address problems and challenging situations, with the goal of sustaining a lasting shift in culture.

The fourth training will take place on October 25; the date of the fifth training has yet to be announced.
