In observance of Veterans’ Day, all Melrose municipal buildings, apart from public safety buildings, will be closed on Friday, November 10. The City’s trash and recycling schedule for the week of November 6 through November 11 will not be affected by the holiday (Friday’s collection will take place on November 10, not November 11 as previously scheduled).

This Veterans’ Day, the City of Melrose will honor and thank all active duty and deceased veterans who have sacrificed and defended the country’s freedoms and their families by hosting a series of Veterans’ Day events, which will begin with a Food Drive for local veterans on Saturday, November 4, and end with the City’s annual Veterans’ Day Ceremonies—a Salute to Veterans—on Saturday, November 11.

“As a 21-year Army Veteran and the Veteran Service Director for Melrose, I want to emphasize how important it is to honor all our Veterans, living and deceased,” said Roseann Trionfi-Mazzuchelli, Veterans Services Director for Melrose, Saugus, and Wakefield. “As a community, please join us to show your support and gratitude for the living Veterans that make up approximately 20% of the U.S. population today. By honoring them and thanking them and their families for their sacrifices, we communicate that we are here for them, always.”

On Saturday, November 4, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Melrose Veterans’ Advisory Board will host its annual Food Drive at the Melrose Shaw’s Supermarket. The goal of the drive is to fill local veterans' shelves with non-perishable food items and collect gift cards and monetary donations to support Melrose’s food banks and Veterans’ services.

On the morning of Thursday, November 9, Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School Principal Joshua Murphy will host the annual Melrose Middle School Breakfast and Veterans Day Assembly. The morning will begin with breakfast from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. and will be followed by an assembly of students who will honor our veterans and their families, complete with music, tributes to veterans, and more. Veterans who are planning on attending this free event should RSVP to Melrose Middle School at 781-462-3103.

On Saturday, November 11—Veterans’ Day, the City will honor veterans and their families by hosting the annual Veterans’ Day Ceremonies (a Salute to Veterans) with a brief visit to the City’s veterans memorials. The salute will begin at 10 a.m. at the Vietnam Reflection area at the Knoll (across from the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School). The Salute will continue to the Vietnam Memorial on Main Street, then to the Honor Roll, and will conclude with a coalition at the VFW Post on Main Street where complimentary refreshments will be served.

Please call the Melrose Veterans Services Office, 781-979-4186, with any questions relating to the City’s Veterans' Day events or the Charity to support the Veterans’ Memorials or the local food pantries.
