City Engineering Dept. Currently Performing Routine Water Main Maintenance Throughout Melrose

This maintenance could cause residents to experience brown water.

The City of Melrose is currently conducting routine water main maintenance in various locations throughout the City. This maintenance could cause residents to experience brown water. Please note, that this is only a one-day water maintenance test.

If your residence is experiencing brown water, please note the following instructions:

  • Turn your cold water on first from the lowest point in the house, preferably your spigot or in a tub, and let it run until it is clear.
  • Do not run your hot water or use your dishwasher until the water is clear.
  • Do not use your washing machine during or immediately after-- your clothes may become stained.
    •  If they do, do not wash them again. Call the Public Works Engineering Division office at City Hall (781-979-4172) and we will provide you with a product, rust out, that will most likely take the rust off your clothes.
  • Although the water is safe to drink, please avoid drinking the water if it is discolored.

Please call the Public Works Engineering Division office at 781-979-4172 with any questions.
