City Employees Participate in Final DEI Training of 2023

Equity will continue to be the focal point this week for City of Melrose employees participating in their fifth and final DEI Training session with the City’s consultant, Racial Equity Group. The training, " Equity SWOT Analysis and Systems Thinking,” will take place on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, and will equip City staff with a functioning understanding of how to assess, analyze, and address disparities within departmental policies and practices and contribute to advancing equity within departments.

To ensure all staff can participate in the training, many City departments will be lightly staffed, and the following City offices will be closed:

  • The Veterans’ Services Department, from 9:15 to 11:45 a.m.
  • The Inspection Services Office, from 9:15 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • The Melrose Public Library, with a delayed opening of 1 p.m.
  • The Clerks Office, from 12:45 until 3:15 p.m.
  • The Assessors Office, from 12:45 until 3:15 p.m.
  • The Office of the Clerk of Committees, from 12:45 until 3:15 p.m.

“As a human resource professional, I, alongside the Mayor, am charged with promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion for the City of Melrose and its employees,” said Polina Latta, Director of Human Resources for the City of Melrose. “I’m thankful to Bird Guess, our DEI Consultant, for providing our employees with the fundamental tools and knowledge to ensure that the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion are identifiable in our practices and policies and valued in our culture. I look forward to continuing this work alongside my colleagues as we implement our learnings.”

The DEI training courses were the next step in implementing the recommendations outlined in the City’s 2022 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Assessment and Racial Climate Survey. Through the training series, the City seeks to empower employees to recognize, respect, and value the differences that lead to innovative approaches and diverse thought and to develop skills to address problems and challenging situations, with the goal of sustaining a lasting shift in culture.
