The non-profit orginization, Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD), offers a fuel assistance program, LIHEAP, that could help pay your winter heating bill by working directly with vendors, and could connect you with other free resources.

LIHEAP stands for Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, also more commonly known as fuel assistance.

ABCD stands for Action Boston Community Development. ABCD serves the cities and towns of Melrose, Malden, Medford, Everett, Stoneham, Winchester, Woburn, in addition to In addition to Boston, Brookline and Newton. Each year, ABCD provides more than 100,000 low income residents in the Greater Boston region with the tools and resources that help them gain financial stability.

Who Qualifies:
 

  • Homeowners and renters, including households whose cost of heat is included in the rent, can apply
  • Renters in non-subsidized housing with heat included in their rent can  apply
  • Applicant’s gross family income must be 60% or less than the Massachusetts median income
  • EXAMPLES: the income of one person must be $46,437 or less; the income of a family of five must be $90,141 or less

How to Apply:

  • Residents can also contact their utility company, such as National Grid, to apply for an income-eligible rate that will provide a discount on your entire home energy bill

  • No fee is required to apply, and free help is available to complete applications
  • Watch out for scams by people charging an “application fee” to help submit an application
