1/30 Evening Snow Update: Trash & Recycling, Driving Conditions, Shoveling & More

Good evening, Melrose,

Over the past 48 hours, the Department of Public Works (DPW) has provided the City with continuous snow plow coverage. For the remainder of this evening (1/30), DPW crews will continue working to clear our City streets, sidewalks, and parking lots of snow. Continue reading to learn more and stay in-the-know about the snow.

The DPW’s Focus This Evening & Into the Week

  • The DPW team is currently salting City sidewalks and City streets, and are continuing to clean up the roads that require additional sweeping by plows.
  • Overnight, a crew will be dedicated to clearing snow away from the curb ramps in order to open up the City crosswalks. Another crew will be dedicated to widening roads that have narrowed due to the snow.
  • Later this week, the DPW will bring in additional snow removal crews to remove excess snow from parking lots.

School & Municipal Buildings Update

  • All public buildings, including all Melrose Public Schools, will be open tomorrow, 1/31/22.
  • This evening, a DPW crew will be focused on clearing all school parking lots and sidewalks of snow.
  • This DPW crew will also put ice melt down on all sidewalks, to make sure they are all ice-free, so both parking lots and sidewalks are ready for school tomorrow morning.

What the Community Can do To Help

  • Continue to exercise patience as DPW crews work around the clock.
  • Do your best not to shovel, plow, or blow snow back into the streets.
  • Be careful while driving (if you must go out, drive slowly), especially on the City’s side streets
    • Many of the City's side streets have been narrowed due to the snow.
    • The snow has caused day-time glares, and snow banks have caused blind spots for drivers and pedestrians.
  • As drivers approach intersections, please give yourself a safe stopping distance.
  • Above all, the City encourages drivers to slow down while driving past people shoveling, jogging and walking, and children playing.

A Note to the Melrose Business Community

  • Business owners are required by law to clear the sidewalk in front of their businesses.
  • The City asks business owners to take note if private plow companies have dumped snow into the streets or into sidewalks after plowing.

Trash & Recycling Update

  • For the week of 1/31/22, trash and recycling services will continue without delay.
  • This week, the City of Melrose encourages everyone to put their trash and recycling out in the early morning, by 7:00a.m. instead of the evening, as DPW crews will be working overnight to continue cleaning up the snow
  • If JRM, the third-party trash and recycling contractor for the City of Melrose, cancels or delays trash pickup, the City will inform the community as soon as possible. As of now, all trash and recycling services will continue this week without delay.
