Save Money: Renew Your Dog’s License Before March 15, 2024 

Following the Melrose City Charter, and  Mass General Laws,  all dogs over 6 months must be licensed annually by March 15. The City’s Fees remain $20 for Neutered/Spayed dogs and $23 for Intact dogs. If renewed after March 15, 2024, the price increases by $15, to $35 and $38 respectively.

While dog license registration forms will be delivered to every Melrose household (along with the annual city Census) by mid-January, dog owners can get a head start by renewing their dog license(s) online, in person, or by mail. 

  • To renew online, visit https://www.cityofmelrose.org/dogs

  • To renew in person, complete an application at the Clerk’s Office located on the first floor of City Hall 

  • To renew by mail, send a completed application to the attention of the City Clerk’s Office, 562 Main Street, Melrose, MA, 02176 

Regardless of how owners plan on renewing their dog license(s), the materials needed to renew and register a dog license are the same: 

  1. A completed registration form. 

  1. A rabies certificate (need a veterinarian? A Groomer? The City’s Economic Development web page has a list for that – https://www.cityofmelrose.org/economic-development/pages/pet-care) 

  1. The fee(s) payable by check to the City of Melrose to the attention of the City Clerk’s Office, 562 Main Street, Melrose, MA  02176

To register your new dog(s) either come into the office with the completed form https://www.cityofmelrose.org/sites/g/files/vyhlif3451/f/uploads/dog_license_registration_form.pdfand rabies certificate or mail a completed registration form and rabies certificate, along with fee(s) payable by check to the City of Melrose and sent to the attention of the City Clerk’s Office, 562 Main Street, Melrose, MA  02176. 

Why it’s important to register/renew your dog’s license: 

  • Dog licenses help us return your pet to you quickly

  • They ensure that all dogs are vaccinated against rabies

  • As required by state law, all dogs over 6 months in the city of Melrose need to be licensed annually.  

We are so sorry for those who may have suffered the loss of their pet. Losing a pet that has brought so much joy and become such an important part of your family is difficult. We know it can be a difficult call to make but we would appreciate notification so we may update the database.
