Absentee Voting

Qualifying for an absentee ballot, you must:

  • Be away from your city/town from 7am - 8pm on Election Day or
  • Have a disability that keeps you from voting at your polling place or 
  • Have a religious belief that prevents you from voting on Election Day or
  • You are on active military duty or 
  • You are a U.S. citizen living outside the U.S. or
  • You are requesting an emergency absentee ballot due to hospitalization or
  • You are currently incarcerated for a reason other than a felony conviction.

Any mail-in ballot must be requested in writing by 5 p.m. on the 5th business day (defined as any weekday not a legal holiday) before Election Day.  Applications are available for download here; on the Secretary of the Commonwealth's website here and in paper form in the Elections office located at City Hall (562 Main Street, Melrose).  Applications may be submitted by mail or email. If you are emailing your application, you can either scan or take a photo of your signed application and email it to elections@cityofmelrose.org.    Please note typed signatures are not accepted. 

Returning Your Absentee Ballot

Return your ballot by:
  • mailing it back in the postage paid envelope
  • using the drop-box located in alley way between City Hall and the Melrose post office
  • hand-delivering it to the Elections office in City Hall

Additionally may arrange with to cast your absentee ballot in person at your local election office until 12 p.m. on the day before the election.  As a reminder, you cannot vote in person if your ballot has been accepted by the election office and you can’t take your ballot back or vote again.
