On September 13, The Melrose Lions Club will be holding an Open House for people who are interested in or would like to become a member, at Mount Hood Country Club at 7:00 p.m

As a Lions Club that has been in existence and serving the City of Melrose for 93 years, the Melrose Lions Club is in need of new members, bringing new ideas, to keep evolving and growing. Open to invitation to join are adults who either reside or work in the City of Melrose. The Melrose Lions Club is part of Lions Clubs International, the world's largest service club organization with more than 1.4 million members in approximately 46,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world.

The Melrose Lions hosts several functions throughout the year such as the Eye Opener Brunch and free vision screening at the Eyemobile. The Club also provides reading machines at no cost to the visually impaired and collects used eye glasses to be given away.  Also, the Melrose Lions Club maintains an Adopt a Site.

Perhaps the activity the club is best known for is its operation of the High School Concession Stand. This year, the Melrose Lions Club presented a check to the City of Melrose in the amount of $16,358.00, representing the net proceeds, which are divided between the City and the Club, from the operation of the football and basketball concession stands.

This continues a long standing tradition dating back decades and illustrates the purpose and dedication of the Melrose Lions Club. Originally, there was no concession stand at the football field. Seeing a need, the members of the Melrose Lions Club solicited supplies from local merchants (many already club members) and literally built with their own hands, a simple but efficient structure.

A few years later, a second story, again without cost to the City was added. Although it was unheated, the old concession stand was always warmed by the camaraderie of its members and the enthusiasm of the fans. With the upgrading of the football field, the old concession stand made way but fortunately, the spirit of the old stand remains.

The motto of all Lions clubs, the world over is simple, "We Serve".

If you are new to Melrose or a long time resident that realizes that this wonderful "City" (which feels more like a small town) needs its citizens to "step up", to preserve what we fortunately call home, if you value this community and would like to be a part of its continued vitality, please join us on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at Mount Hood at 7:00 p.m.
