Historical Commission
MISSION STATEMENT
The Melrose Historical Commission was established for the preservation, protection and promotion of the historical heritage, neighborhoods, landscapes, and archeological and architectural assets of the City of Melrose for the use, education and benefit of present and future generations.
DESCRIPTION
The commission is a volunteer organization established by the City Council under the provisions of the Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 40. It fulfills its mission primarily through conducting research into places of historic, architectural, or archeological value. It serves as an advisory body on matters affecting the historical assets of the city to officers, departments, boards, commissions, committees and other agencies of the city. Further, it cooperates and coordinates with the Massachusetts Historical Commission for projects that require review in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 254, as well as the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act.
A significant aspect in realizing its work is promoting the public’s awareness of their city’s rich and fascinating heritage. To this end the commission:
• Holds regular and special meetings. The general public is encouraged to attend these meetings which are governed by the “open meeting laws”. Their times, location, and agendas are available on the city’s website.
• Maintains and updates an inventory of historic properties. Completed surveys are available on the Massachusetts Historical Commission’s website.
• Invites homeowners to a “Research Your Own Home Night” event held at various times every year. “Research Your Home Night” is an event designed by the Historical Commission to help Melrose residents learn about the unique histories of their homes. Those who sign up to participate learn how to use several online and print resources, such as property maps, historic neighborhood maps, city directories, census directories, and more to learn about their home’s history and the families who once lived there.
• Encourages citizens to visit its booth at the Victorian Fair each September. This provides an opportunity for all citizens to interact with commission members in an informal setting and become aware of our resources and activities.
