Climate Adaptation

Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Designation

Melrose was in the first class of Massachusetts communities in 2018 to become designated as a Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness community and therefore eligible to apply for MVP Action Grants. The MVP planning process culminated in a series of stakeholder workshops to discuss the climate risks in Melrose and the priority actions the City needs to take to address them. The community engagement on the Melrose Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Plan was closely followed by the development of the city’s Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan update. In 2019 the City received MVP Action Grant funding to design a green infrastructure solution for the flooding in the City Hall parking lot from severe rainstorms. More recent grants include funding to conduct an analysis of flood exposure and impacts for the Upper Mystic Watershed and the development of green building design guidelines for new development.
