$2M More Toward Renovation Gifted by Library Trustees

Melrose Library Trustees Give $2M Toward Renovation

MELROSE, MA—Through a unanimous vote Wednesday evening, the Melrose Board of Library Trustees will commit $2,000,000 toward renovating the historic Melrose Public Library building. These funds are in addition to the $8M construction grant the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) awarded earlier this month. Together these funds represent approximately half of the project cost.

“I am just thrilled at this clear statement of support from the Trustees,” said Library Director Linda Gardener. “They understand the importance of this project, both to protect our beautiful historic building and to move forward in offering 21st century access and services.”

The City of Melrose must secure the funds for the remainder of the project before January 2022 in order to receive the grant from MBLC. The project will be put before the City Council for a vote to authorize a bond for the remainder of the costs.

“I am so grateful to the Trustees for their strong commitment to this project as well as their keen financial stewardship throughout the years,” said Mayor Paul Brodeur. “It shows a dedication to Melrose and is an important step forward in our financial plan for the library and all of our capital projects, which I look forward to presenting to the community very soon.”
