Would You Like to See More Trees in Melrose?

Celebrate Arbor Day, Plant a Tree in Melrose

MELROSE, MA—My office is pleased to collaborate with Keep Melrose Beautiful and the Melrose High Environmental Club, who are bringing the Tree-Plenish initiative to Melrose.

Volunteers from the MHS Environmental Club hope to plant 250 trees on Saturday, April 24, to offset the school’s paper usage during a typical year (in this case, 2018-2019).

There are two ways you can help:

1. Request-a-Tree: As a homeowner, you may reserve one or more trees for your yard. Trees cost $5 each (plus a small handling fee) and come in three species: eastern redbud, red maple or river birch. They arrive as 18-24 inch saplings and will be planted by MHS volunteers or available for pick up at the high school on April 24.

2. Foster-a-Tree: Are you interested in helping to build a more sustainable Melrose, but don’t want to commit to having a tree for the next century? Would you like to see more trees on municipal land? The City of Melrose could use your help!

You can opt to foster a sapling(s) until it is mature enough to plant in one of our parks or tree lawns. Right now, they’re just too small to survive in the world of snowplows and dogs, so we need residents to nourish them until they can make it on their own. Once your fostered sapling reaches a certain size (about three years), you can decide to donate the tree to the City or choose to keep it. Either way is fine, as long as we get more trees in Melrose!

So far, 164 orders have been submitted. Let’s get 86 more by the April 5th deadline!
