Today Is White Ribbon Day in Melrose

White Ribbon Day Ceremony

We had a beautiful event at City Hall this morning, despite the weather: A group of Melrose men kicked off White Ribbon Day in Melrose with a brief ceremony in which they took the White Ribbon Pledge:

I pledge never to commit, excuse, or stay silent about men's violence toward women. From this day forward, I promise to be part of the solution in ending all gender-based violence.

I proclaimed it White Ribbon Day, and we will raise a special flag on the City Hall flagpole later today, weather permitting.

The White Ribbon Campaign was created by a handful of Canadian men in 1991 on the second anniversary one man's massacre of 14 women in Montreal. Today, it's a worldwide campaign in over 60 countries, and Melrose is proud to join this year. Thank you to the Melrose Alliance Against Violence, MAAV Executive Director Rebecca Mooney, and Mike Zwirko, President of the Board of Aldermen, for their hard work in making this event a success.
