South Main Street Project Recommendations Finalized

As part of our Multi-year Roadway and Utility Improvements Program, the City of Melrose is finalizing the design of the South Main Street corridor. Extensive public input, received through a survey, emails to City staff, and public meetings, was taken into account when developing the City’s recommended plan.  After reviewing a wealth of input from both community members and internal stakeholders regarding the South Main Street Pilot Project, the City is pleased to present our final recommendations. The complete summary document that describes the South Main Street project objectives, the results of our community survey, and the recommended line striping plan for Main Street south of Wyoming Avenue is available here.

Highlights of the recommended plan include: accessible crosswalks at all MBTA bus stops, dedicated bike lanes from the Malden city limit to just south of Mount Vernon Street, and enhanced pavement markings at intersections to facilitate turning movements for all users of the roadway.

Based on extensive public feedback, including concerns expressed by drivers, cyclists, abutters, and public safety personnel, the City is not recommending bike lanes protected by the parking lane on the northbound side. The recommended line striping plans can be viewed here:

There will be additional opportunities for public discussion about the recommended plan, including a community meeting scheduled for October 25th and a Traffic Commission virtual hearing scheduled for October 28th. More details will follow about the time and location of these meetings. For questions or comments, please email sharedstreets@cityofmelrose.org.

Paving of Main Street is scheduled for the end of October or early November, weather permitting. We look forward to continuing to work toward a safe and successful project on South Main Street.
