Slow Streets Returning to Melrose

Slow Streets

MELROSE, MA—As early as Monday, temporary road safety materials and signs will be deployed on selected streets in Melrose in order to slow vehicle speeds and provide residents with safer outdoor space to walk, bike, and play as part of a MassDOT grant-funded initiative.

There are currently six approved Slow Streets: Lynde St., Briggs St., Faxon St, Gooch St., Linden Rd., and Burrell St. Public safety and Department of Public Works staff have carefully reviewed and approved the locations.

“We ran Slow Streets last year, and this grant program is intended to address the need for expanded use of outdoor space in light of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mayor Paul Brodeur. “Although we are beginning to enter a vaccinated ‘new normal’, traffic continues to be an issue in many Melrose neighborhoods. Our residents who participated last year really enjoyed it, and it made our residential streets safer for our kids.”

The volunteer-led Melrose Pedestrian & Bicyclist Committee is helping to implement the program in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office.
