A Message from Mayor Brodeur: Melrose Responds to Tragedies in Uvalde Texas and Buffalo New York

vigil

I am troubled and outraged over the tragic events that have taken place across this country over the last two weeks – the mass shootings at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, that took the lives of 19 children and two teachers and left dozens of children injured; and in Buffalo, N.Y., where 10 Black people were murdered and countless injured in an act of racially-motivated violence.

I offer my deepest condolences to the families, friends, teachers, and classmates enduring these horrific tragedies. I also ask Congress to act, and governors and state legislators to take action to pass reasonable gun safety legislation.

Finally, tonight, on the two-year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, community members can join the Melrose Clergy Association for the Community Prayer Vigil taking place on the lawn of the First Baptist Church, 561 Main Street, at 7 p.m.

This is an opportunity for the community to come together to honor and remember all those murdered and harmed in these last two weeks. We will hold space for those most affected, and we will hear from different faith leaders tonight and together talk about things we can do to help. As murders and crimes continue, Melrose will unite and raise our voices against these devastations.

Please invite your friends, families, and neighbors to attend.

Thank you for reading.

Sincerely,

Mayor Paul Brodeur
