Melrose Recreation Department Reopens for Phase Two

The Melrose Recreation Department has reopened and is initially offering a limited slate of summer programs in Phase Two as well as a modified version of the traditional Independence Day celebration.

“Now that the state has begun to reopen and established some guidelines for summer programming, we are offering some of these programs for our youth beginning on June 15,” said Mayor Paul Brodeur. “We are keeping these limited at first, as the safety of our participants and their families will always be our first priority. With that in mind, we will strictly follow the state guidelines, while making sure folks to be able to get out there and have a good time.”

The revised schedule includes programs for Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School and Melrose High School students as well as Lego programs for children of various ages from 6 to 14. Participants in those programs will pick up a sanitized Lego kit and build an amusement park or a Minecraft Kingdom working with instructors via Zoom.

For over 50 years, Melrose children have celebrated the Fourth of July with a parade of bikes, wagons, carriages, scooters, and skateboards that goes around Melrose Common. This year, the Recreation Department is asking residents to parade in their neighborhoods, local parks, or the downtown area to avoid having a large gathering at the Common. We ask that all participants follow the state’s physical distancing and face covering recommendations that are in place that day.

The revised Phase Two Summer Program booklet is available on the Recreation Department home page. To register, go to the “Forms” section on that page and select the Program Registration Form. Capacity is limited. For more information, e-mail the department at recreation@cityofmelrose.org.
