Melrose Middle School Students Qualify for National History Bee & U.S. Geography Olympiad

Principal Brent Conway is pleased to report that several Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School students recently qualified for the National History Bee after the students excelled at a competition on April 13.

At the Boston Regional Finals, a qualifying event for the National History Bee, held at Malden Catholic High School, Melrose sixth graders Raessler Guthrie, Erik Hall, and Liam Nobles; seventh graders Noah Brown, Zack Latta-Giuliana, Spencer Lewis, Sammy Mounsif, and Ben O'Donnell; and eighth grader Morgan Hartwell all earned a spot in the national finals.

At the same time, seven MVMMS students also qualified for the 2018 US Geography Olympiad. The qualifying students are: Guthrie, Hall, Hartwell, and four other students, sixth grader Philip Murray, seventh grader Jack Morrissey, and eighth graders Alex Harriott and Shannon Murphy.

"The National History Bee’s final stage is the National Finals, which sees students from all across the United States compete for the title of National History Bee Grand Champion! The National Finals are held each year during an exciting weekend of competitions and activities," according to Academic Competition Enterprises, Inc., which conducts the events.

Both the History Bee and Geography Olympiad will be held June 1-2 at the Atlanta Mariott Marquis in Atlanta.

Principal Conway wishes to recognize Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School Geography Teacher Robert Mahoney, who is also the school's History Department Content Facilitator and serves as coach and adviser for students competing in these civic events.
